"No Child Left Behind." We fit the initiatives.

We entered the new year with a definiate new sense of spirit, pride, and a strong feeling of unity which has not been felt in this country for many generations. This, more than likely, explains the sense of resolve I have witnessed in the fabulous people who work with me at our center and the wonderful families and teachers I encounter everyday.

With this sense of "renewal" comes an opportunity for the future workforce and leaders of our country - an opportunity for no child to be left behind their peers in school because they can't read.

FEARS OF THE LEFT BEHIND

Sitting behind a screen at the back of the preschool room peering around the edge of the screen, the boy worries about why he is there.

Anxiously he prepares. His feet drum the tune of tension. His face contorts to match the speed of small hands folding paper into tiny wads until the missile is perfected. A small wad is launched to the land on the other side.

Strange requests, strange sounds, strange pictures of shapes that float, that hold no meaning, that hold no order always come from over there - on that side where that teacher is, where the other desks are. The books, the noise, the other side, the land of those who read.

Whispered calls fly back. Looks from angry faces dart to the frightened boy behind the screen. Fear of not understanding what others seem to know haunts him. Depression, anger, confusion.

And no hope of ever knowing how to become one on the other side.

This is how it feels to be a child who is "left behind."
