Garden
Plain State Bank was granted a charter by the State Banking Commission
on December 12, 1966, and opened for business on December 21,
1966 in Garden Plain, Kansas. George D. Walden, the bank's first
President, assumed additional duties as Chairman of the Board
on July 13, 1988. In December of 1997, Patrick J. Walden was
elected President. George Walden continued on as Chairman of
the Board and still holds that office today.
The
bank has enjoyed a steady growth since its inception. With a
solid customer base already established in Garden Plain, the
board of directors made the decision to expand into the Wichita
market. In 1989 the Garden Plain State Bank opened its doors
at 10526 West Maple in Wichita and followed that with branches
at 1400 South Oliver (Parklane Center) in 1994 and 47th and Broadway
(Checkers) in 1995. Because of the recent closing of the Checker's
Grocery Store, the bank had to close that branch. From its beginning
in 1966, the bank's capital has increased from $180,000 to $4,062,000
as of December 31, 2003.
Garden
Plain State Bank offers a variety of accounts, from free checking
for individuals to competitive checking accounts for corporations.
Also, the popular ATM/debit card is available on most personal
accounts which allows customers to get cash 24 hours a day. For
the convenience of our customers, the Parklane branch maintains
an ATM machine on the east side of the building. In addition
to checking accounts the bank offers savings accounts, certificates
of deposit, safe deposit boxes, and consumer and commercial loans
at very competitive interest rates.
Roy
Strayer, Assistance Vice-President and Manager of the Parklane
branch states, "What sets the Garden Plain State Bank apart
from other financial institutions is service. We are large enough
to serve the larger businesses, yet small enough to provide that
personal touch our customers deserve and expect. Also, our accounts
are structured to provide basic banking needs at a very competitive
cost."
