Payless ShoeSource was founded in 1956 in Topeka, Kansas. It was started by two cousins, Louis and Shoal Pozez, with a vision of providing family footwear at affordable prices in a then unique self-service environment. The founders emphasized footweaer quality and value at reasonable prices. These factors are still important to the company today. Reasonable prices are made possible, in part, because of the self-service environment.

In 1962, the growing footwear chain became a public company. The company's success attracted the attention of The May Department Stores Company of St. Louis, Missouri, and in 1979 the footwear chain was acquired by the retail giant. Payless grew from fewer than 800 stores to over 4000.

The Payless ShoeSource currently located in Parklane was opened in 1964. It was the 77th store, and the second location opened in the City of Wichita. Today, Payless sells more footwear in the United States than any other company and continues to expand. The goal of Payless ShoeSource is sales growth and profitable operations through customer satisfaction. We have set a precedent for high return on sales in the footwear industry.
