Nearly
5000 aerospace employees know Parklane Center as the regional home
of their labor union - The Society of Professional Engineering Employees
in Aerospace (SPEEA).
Affiliated
with the International Federation of Professional and Technical
Engineers (IFPTE) and the AFL-CIO, the local SPEEA office is part
of the 20,000 strong IFPTE Local 2001. In addition to representing
employees at Boeing in Wichita, the Midwest office also administers
contracts for the BAE Systems plant in Irving, Texas.
Starting
from a small, one-person office at Parklane, SPEEA occupies a much
larger space today. The staff of four full-time employees includes
Midwest Directory Bob Brewer, Contract Administrators BJ Moore and
Deb Shepard, and Office Administrator Sandy Early. The office draws
a steady stream of members, union leaders and aerospace officials
who work issues related to the jobs, wages and benefits of represented
employees at the Wichita plant.
The
office's meeting room is the site for monthly meetings of SPEEA's
Midwest Council. A variety of other union meetings are also held
at the facility. Union elections and workplace events often draw
local news media to SPEEA for comments about issues affecting thousands
of technical and professional workers in the greater Wichita Community.
As
the year 2005 approaches, there are many employees that could possibly
be affected by the sale of the Boeing Commercial Division here in
Wichita. SPEEA now represents employees in Spokane, Washington with
the Triumph Group, Ltd. Also represented are employees in Irving,
Texas with BAE Systems. SPEEA employees, families and the surrounding
communities all play a huge part in the future of Wichita. SPEEA
works very hard to maintain the standard of living for employees
as they move forward into a very global and dynamic changing work
environment.
